Hearing instruments are available in a variety of styles ranging from the completely invisible to the more traditional. We are able to talk through the advantages and drawbacks of each type and advise on the most appropriate styles for your hearing level and lifestyle.
Behind-the-Ear Hearing Instruments
Components in these instruments are contained in the housing that rests behind the ear, connected by a thin wire/tube which rests in the canal.
BTE Behind the Ear
The largest instrument. Easiest to manage. Sound delivered using a tube connected to a custom mould or tip. This system has directional microphones. Battery: Size 312 or 13 or 675. Last approximately 5-21 days.
RIC Receiver in the Canal
The smallest BTE instrument. Allows more normal ventilation of the ear and subsequently a more natural sound. Sound delivered using a thin wire. Power level can be increased. This system has directional microphones. Battery: Size 10 or 312 or 13. Last approximately 3-14 days.
Lyric
Continuous Wear Invisible Device. The Lyric is the only continuous wear hearing aid available for hearing loss. Completely invisible, the hearing aid is worn 24/7 for weeks at a time through activities such as showering, exercising and sleeping. It is considered the ‘contact lens’ equivalent for hearing. You do have the option to remove Lyric at any stage; however you will not be able to reinsert yourself. You do have control of the volume and are able to turn it off completely. Presently, Lyric is only suitable for about 50%% of candidates.
ITE In The Ear
In the Ear, Full Shell. Made to fit within the outer ear. This system has directional microphones. Battery: Size 312 or 13. Last approximately 5-14 days.
Micro Open Ear
Slightly larger than the RIC. Easier to manage. Sound delivered using a thin tube. This system has directional microphones. Battery: Size 312 or 13. Last approximately 5-14 days.
ITC In The Canal
In the Canal, Half Shell. Small enough to fit almost entirely in your ear canal. This system has directional microphones. Battery: Size 312. Last approximately 5-7 days.
CIC Completely In the Canal
Slightly larger than the IIC sitting at the entrance of the canal. This system does not include directional microphones. Battery: Size 10. Last approximately 3-5 days.
