Why Cotton Buds Feel Good But Don’t Belong in Your Ears

Cotton buds might feel satisfying, but they often do more harm than good. Discover why hearing professionals advise against using them and what you should do instead.

Many people admit it quietly: cleaning your ears with a cotton bud just feels good. So why do hearing professionals repeatedly warn against using them?

At Tripp Hearing, this is one of the most common topics we discuss with patients, and the reason might surprise you.

Why Cotton Buds Feel So Satisfying

The ear canal is lined with sensitive nerve endings. When you insert a cotton bud, the gentle pressure and movement can temporarily relieve itchiness or irritation. This creates a pleasant sensation, much like scratching an itch.

However, feeling good doesn’t always mean doing good.

What’s Actually Happening Inside Your Ear

Despite their name, cotton buds are not designed to clean inside the ear canal. In fact, they often cause more harm than benefit:

  • Wax is pushed deeper

Instead of removing ear wax, cotton buds usually push it further down the canal, where it can become compacted against the eardrum.

  • Increased risk of blockage

Compacted wax is one of the most common causes of muffled hearing, discomfort, ringing in the ears, and sudden hearing loss.

  • Irritation and infection

Cotton buds can cause tiny scratches to the delicate skin of the ear canal. These small injuries make the ear more prone to inflammation and infection, including painful outer ear infections (otitis externa).

  • Risk of injury

A sudden movement, even something as simple as turning your head, can lead to serious damage, including a perforated eardrum.

Your Ears Are Self-Cleaning

A key fact many people don’t realise: ears clean themselves.

Ear wax (cerumen) plays an important role. It protects the ear canal by trapping dust and bacteria and slowly moves outwards naturally through jaw movement such as talking and chewing.

When we interfere with this process by using cotton buds, we often create the very problems we’re trying to avoid.

So What Should You Do Instead?

  • Clean only the outer ear with a cloth or tissue.
  • Avoid inserting anything into the ear canal – including cotton buds.
  • If ears feel blocked, itchy, or uncomfortable:
    • Use olive oil or ear drops if advised.
    • Seek professional advice rather than attempting DIY removal.

At Tripp Hearing, we offer safe, gentle ear wax removal using microsuction, carried out by trained professionals. It’s the gold standard for wax removal and avoids the risks associated with cotton buds.

The Take-Home Message

Cotton buds feel good because they stimulate sensitive nerves, but they often create long-term problems, from wax build-up to infection and hearing loss.

When it comes to your ears, the safest rule is simple:

Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.

If you’re experiencing blocked ears, discomfort, or changes in your hearing, the team at Tripp Hearing is always happy to help.
